This is one of my most prized ceramic pieces. It was hand thrown, bisque fired, glazed, and then fired in a wood kiln. The wood kiln firing gives miraculous colors and textures because the wood ash solidifies and gives unpredictable, and sometimes disappointing, results. Since different kinds of ash are the primary ingredient, I did some research and found that I could make a glaze using the leftover ashes from my charcoal grill. As you can see by the drip at the bottom of the handle, the nutrients from the food formed that highly sought after effect. It reminds me of an amber stone – which is solidified tree sap. The brown flashing on the main image is just bare clay body (no glaze) and the wood kiln did its part by painting it all different hues, and creating this magnificent landscape.
